Local Government Reorganisation in Hertfordshire: What It Means for Walkern
On 16 July 2026, the Government announced its decision on Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) in Hertfordshire. Subject to parliamentary approval, Hertfordshire will move from the current county, district and borough structure to four new unitary authorities. These new councils will take over responsibility for all local services from 1 April 2028.
Walkern will become part of the Eastern Hertfordshire Unitary Authority.
The Four New Unitary Authorities
- North West Hertfordshire Covering Dacorum and St Albans.
- South West Hertfordshire Covering Hertsmere, Three Rivers and Watford.
- Central Hertfordshire Covering Stevenage, most of North Herts, and most of Welwyn Hatfield.
- Eastern Hertfordshire Covering Broxbourne and East Herts, plus Northaw & Cuffley (from Welwyn Hatfield) and several wards from North Herts including Royston Heath, Royston Palace, Royston Meridian, Ermine, Weston and Sandon.
Walkern, as part of East Herts District, will fall within this Eastern Hertfordshire area.

Why This Model Was Chosen
The Government stated that the four‑council structure reflects Hertfordshire’s distinct economic areas, strengthens local community connections, and provides a foundation for future devolution. Hertfordshire is seeking to establish a Strategic Mayoral Authority with a directly elected Mayor to take on devolved powers and funding.
What Happens Next
- May 2027: Elections will be held for the new unitary councils.
- 2027–2028: Newly elected councillors will operate in a “shadow” capacity to set up the new authorities.
- 1 April 2028: The new councils formally take over all services.
All existing councils remain committed to maintaining high‑quality services throughout the transition.
