Help shape Walkern’s Nature Recovery & Eco Action Plan
Walkern Parish Council is exploring an exciting new initiative to boost local wildlife, restore habitats, and make our parish greener and healthier. But it can only happen with community support. If residents show interest—and get involved—we can bring this plan to life.
Be part of the change
We’re inviting local people to help shape and potentially deliver this project. Whether you’d like to share ideas in a Working Group or volunteer on the ground, your involvement matters.
Our vision
To restore and enhance Walkern’s natural environment, creating thriving spaces for wildlife and a greener future for everyone.
Nature recovery initiatives
- No Mow Zones – Encourage wildflowers and pollinators (March–September). Try “No Mow May” at home too.
- Hedgehog Highways & Pollinator Support – Add 13cm x 13cm fence holes, hedgehog houses, and bug hotels to help small creatures thrive.
- Put up Bat & Swift Boxes – providing nesting sites for declining species
- Wildflowering & Hedgerow Revival – Sow native wildflowers in unused spaces and help replant hedgerows
- Water & River Health – Join efforts to clean rivers, test water quality, and create wildlife ponds.
Community engagement & education
- Walkern Wild Campaign Wildlife Week – species surveys, a parish nature map, and sightings logged via iNaturalist.
- Keep Walkern Clean – Litter picks, nature walks, and creating a Peace Garden at Old Froghall Lane Cemetery.
- Eco Noticeboard & Green Pledge – Tips, updates, and a shared commitment to sustainable living—plus eco‑friendly planning.
