🌿 Walkern’s Nature Recovery & Eco Action Plan 🌿
Walkern Parish Council is exploring the launch of a Nature Recovery and Eco Action Plan—but it will only go ahead if local residents show interest and get involved.
We’re inviting the community to help shape and potentially deliver this initiative. Whether you’d like to contribute ideas as part of a Working Group or lend a hand as a volunteer, your support will be essential.
Our Vision
To restore and enhance the natural environment of Walkern Parish, creating a thriving habitat for wildlife and a greener, healthier space for residents. This includes:
Nature Recovery Initiatives
No Mow Zones
Designated areas (March–September) to encourage wildflowers and pollinators. Join “No Mow May” in your own garden!
Hedgehog Highways & Pollinator Support
Install hedgehog houses and fence holes (13cm x 13cm). Build bug hotels to welcome beneficial insects.
Bat & Swift Boxes
Provide nesting sites for declining species—swift boxes on buildings, bat boxes in trees and quiet woodlands.
Wildflowering & Hedgerow Revival
Sow native wildflowers in unused spaces. Replant hedgerows and partner with landowners for larger-scale efforts.
Water & River Health
Collaborate with local groups to clean rivers, test water quality, and create wildlife ponds.
Community Engagement & Education
Walkern Wild Campaign
Celebrate nature with Wildlife Week, species surveys, and a parish nature recovery map. Log sightings via iNaturalist.
Keep Walkern Clean
Join litter-picking events, nature walks, and help create a Peace Garden at Old Froghall Lane Cemetery.
Eco Noticeboard & Green Pledge
Share tips, updates, and commit to sustainable living. Let’s embed eco-action in every planning decision.
If you’re passionate about protecting our local environment and building a greener future for Walkern, we’d love to hear from you.
